Get ready for an unforgettable journey into the remote highlands of southern Cusco. The Pallay Punchu Mountain Tour takes you far from the busiest tourist routes to a spectacular landscape of colorful mountain ridges, traditional Andean communities, and the beautiful Langui Lagoon.
This full-day adventure combines a scenic road trip, a short but challenging hike, breathtaking viewpoints, and an authentic experience in the Peruvian Andes.
Our adventure begins early in the morning with hotel pick-up in Cusco at approximately 4:00 a.m. We will travel in comfortable private transportation toward the southern part of the Cusco region.
After around two hours on the road, we will arrive in Cusipata, where we will make a stop for breakfast. Here, you can enjoy a warm and nutritious meal before continuing toward the highlands.
We will then continue through Marangani and Sicuani, following the route toward the district of Layo. As we leave the main roads behind, the scenery becomes increasingly rural, revealing agricultural fields, grazing livestock, small Andean settlements, and expansive mountain landscapes.
The journey to the trailhead takes approximately four hours from Cusco, depending on weather, traffic, and road conditions.
Once we arrive at the starting point, our professional guide will explain the hiking route and provide recommendations for walking safely at high altitude.
The hike begins with a steady uphill ascent of approximately 50 minutes. Although the distance is relatively short, the elevation and steep sections can make the walk challenging. We will therefore maintain a comfortable pace and stop whenever necessary.
As we climb higher, the surrounding landscape gradually opens up. The wide Andean valleys, rolling grasslands, rocky slopes, and distant peaks create an impressive setting.
Along the trail, we may encounter llamas, alpacas, sheep, native birds, and local farmers, depending on the season and weather conditions.
The closer we get to the summit, the more visible the unusual colors and patterns of Pallay Punchu become.
After completing the ascent, we will arrive at one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the area.
Pallay Punchu is famous for its naturally striped mountain formations, displaying a remarkable combination of red, orange, ochre, green, gray, and purple tones. The patterns resemble the woven designs of a traditional Andean poncho, giving the mountain its name.
Our guide will explain the natural processes responsible for the mountain's distinctive appearance, as well as the cultural significance of the surrounding Andean landscape.
From the viewpoint, you will have plenty of time to appreciate the scenery, take photographs, and simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere away from the crowds.
One of the highlights of the excursion is the spectacular view toward Langui Lagoon.
From the elevated viewpoint, the lagoon appears surrounded by mountains, high-altitude grasslands, and vast open valleys. The combination of the colorful mountain formations and the deep blue waters of the lagoon creates an extraordinary Andean panorama.
We will spend approximately one hour exploring the viewpoint and enjoying the landscape.
Because of the altitude, it is important to move slowly, drink plenty of water, and follow the recommendations of your guide throughout the visit.
After enjoying Pallay Punchu and its panoramic surroundings, we will begin our descent. The downhill walk takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the group's pace.
Our private transportation will be waiting at the trailhead. We will then begin the drive back toward Cusipata, where we will stop for a well-deserved lunch.
After lunch, we will continue our journey back to Cusco. During the return drive, you can relax and enjoy the changing scenery of the southern Andes.
We expect to arrive in Cusco at approximately 5:00 p.m., although the exact arrival time can vary due to traffic, weather, road conditions, and the pace of the group.
Upon arrival, we will transfer you back to your hotel, marking the end of your Pallay Punchu Mountain full-day adventure.
Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca is located in Peru, in the Cusco region, province of Canchis in the village of Pitumarca.
This mountain is a natural formation that shows the whim of nature through kilometers of land that are changing their coloring by the richness in minerals and it is from the viewpoint of Vinicunca, from where you will have a spectacular view of the entire Cordillera of the Andes with its whimsical colors that resemble the Rainbow.
The point of maximum height is 5200 meters above sea level; however the tour part of the city of Cusco, passing through towns like Checacupe and Pitumarka until you get to the start point of the walk called Pampachiri to 3800 meters above sea level, from where we will ascend to the observation deck at a height of 5200 meters above sea level.
The Mountain Rainbow is located 138 km from the city of Cusco and takes about 4 hours to get to this place between the trip by car and on foot without counting the stops to feed and rest.
The degree of difficulty of this route is intermediate – easy, so it is recommended for people with an optimal physical state, as the advancement could be a little tiring for people who are not accustomed to these walks in height. However you can rent a horse in the same locality of Pampachiri with the Communards who offer this service just for people who cannot walk or not willing to walk for three hours.
You must bear in mind that the horse is guided by a horseman and will leave about 15 minutes from the viewpoint of Vinicunca so if you or if you will have to walk this stretch.
The tour departs every day of the year, being the dry season the most recommended between the months of April to November however the rest of months even with the presence of rain and hail (sometimes) offers us a view that can only be seen with this climate that you can cope with a rain poncho and good trekking shoes.
